Once again gracing Grant Park, Lollapalooza, the renowned four-day, multi-stage concert event, has made its grand return. From August 3-6, the event’s lineup is expected to attract visitors from all over the world. And with a projected attendance of 115,000 people each day, to surpass last year’s figures by 15,000, this year’s festival is set to bring a significant boost to businesses across the state—particularly among the hospitality and retail sectors.
According to a recent study conducted by Texas-based Angelou Economics, commissioned by Lollapalooza’s organizer, C3 Presents, 2022’s festival generated $335.4 million in direct and indirect revenue and $4.2 million in city amusement taxes.
But Lollapalooza isn’t the only event drawing crowds to Chicago.
Other notable events like Taylor Swift, Beyonce, the NASCAR Street Race, and various business conferences have also contributed to the surge. For instance, CBS News reported that while the Swifties were jamming at Soldier Field, approximately 44,000 oncologists were attending an annual conference at McCormick Place.
Subsequently, the city’s hospitality industry has experienced remarkable growth, with hotel revenue reaching $1.2 billion from January to June—a 24% increase compared to 2021 and a 102% increase from pre-pandemic 2019. During this same period, Chicago’s hotel tax generated $62 million in revenue, breaking previous records.
As Lollapalooza begins a new 10-year commitment to the city, the city’s economic prospects seem bright, with various events playing a vital role in driving its success.
