Although a good number of industrial developments are well-received by the local community due to economic benefits, not all projects enjoy widespread support. In certain instances, the disadvantages seem to outweigh the advantages for residents living close by.
A recent example? A proposed industrial development in Cook County has raised concerns among some residents who fear a potential rise in air and noise pollution.
According to NBC Chicago, for Kathy Parker, a resident of Timberline Estates in unincorporated Cook County, the situation is akin to a classic tale of small versus large.
“We live here and we are going to fight this for our safety,” Parker told NBC Chicago.
Located across from Parker’s neighborhood is a former CVS Caremark office complex that might become said development. Possible occupants could include manufacturing companies, warehouses, e-commerce fulfillment companies, or food packaging businesses.
This project would necessitate a change in zoning regulations in the area.
Parker and others are deeply concerned about the potential consequences of such a zoning alteration in regard to increased truck traffic and pollution.
A petition signed by those opposed to the rezoning is circulating, NBC reported.
In a statement, Dermody Properties, the developer behind the project, expressed its desire to collaborate with the village to ensure a mutually beneficial project.
