Landlords in Columbus had a good month in August. Zumper, in its September national rent report, said that this Ohio city saw the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment jump 5.7 percent in August to $740. This is the biggest rent jump of any U.S. city.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that Columbus is the most expensive city in the nation in which to rent an apartment. According to Zumper, Columbus instead ranks as the 88th most expensive market in which to rent a one-bedroom apartment.

The most expensive place to rent? In August, that was – in no surprise – San Francisco. The median monthly one-bedroom rent here was a staggering $3,540.

Back in the Midwest, Memphis, Tennessee, also saw a big jump in median apartment rents. Zumper reported that the median one-bedroom rent in this city climbed 5.5 percent in August, hitting $770. That makes Memphis the 84th most expensive city in the United States in which to rent.

In Akron, Ohio, the median one-bedroom rent climbed 5.5 percent to $580 in August. Even with this jump, though, Akron still ranks as the most affordable major market in which to rent a one-bedroom apartment.

Overall, the national one-bedroom apartment grew 1 percent in August to a median price of $1,250. The median two-bedroom rent in the United States grew 0.5 percent to $1,493. On a year-to-year basis, median one-bedroom rents are up 2.4 percent while two-bedroom median rents are up 2.2 percent.
