Since his days as a college basketball player, Avison Young’s Danny Nikitas has always been a team player. His team approach was put to the test recently, though, when his two sons were about to square off on the college basketball court. What would Danny and his wife, Margaret, do—split their cheers between Jamie’s Lawrence University team and young Danny’s Lake Forest College team? Switch seats at half time?
Instead, they took a true team building approach and had 40 “Team Nikitas” T-shirts made, each sporting Jamie’s Number 3 on one sleeve and Danny’s Number 15 on the other, complete with each school’s logo. Friends and family packed the bleachers to cheer—for both players.
“We were really proud of the boys, who both played great and with a lot of respect for each other and the game,” Nikitas said. “The coaches showed a lot of class by taking them both out separately with a few seconds left and the game out of reach, just so they could bask in the moment and see all the adoring family and friends in the crowd.“ Who won? The official score was 79 to 70 for Lake Forest. But, of course, everyone won.
