CenterPoint Properties has acquired a 19.64-acre barge terminal and conveyor system known as the Port of Will County Barge Terminal. Operational and immediately adjacent to CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Joliet, the property connects North America’s largest inland port to the Des Plaines, Illinois and Mississippi River Systems with strategic access to the Great Lakes.
“This acquisition is the first of its kind for CenterPoint. It provides an abundance of options for our tenants and further maximizes the efficiency of product moved in and out of this globally recognized transportation hub,” said Eric Gilbert, the senior vice president of infrastructure and logistics. “The first barge of dry distiller’s grain arrived on July 3 and was containerized on site for shipment to Asia.”
“We are pleased to build upon the nearly 20-year relationship with CenterPoint,” said Gerard Keating, managing partner of the Port of Will County LLC. “This sale increases the reach for our adjacently located property, Mining International, who will continue to utilize the terminal for the export of aggregates to Chicago, Peoria and surrounding markets.”
With the ability to offer expanded services to a broader set of clientele at the Joliet property, CenterPoint continues to meet the requirements of enhanced transportation efficiencies for a thriving industrial market.
