With housing prices and mortgage interest rates as high as they are today, it’s little surprise that demand for multifamily units remains high across the United States.

But what cities are renters most interested in during the early months of 2026? RentCafe took a look, analyzing four key metrics, to determine that Cincinnati, Atlanta and Minneapolis are the three most in-demand cities for renters in early 2026.

In these places, online interactions on RentCafe.com are rising months before the traditional summer rental boom begins.

To build its list, RentCafe analyzed four key signals of renter interest in each city: apartment availability, favorited listings, saved searches and page views.

Using these metrics, RentCafe found that the most in-demand city for renters in early 2026 was Cincinnati, Ohio.

Why? RentCafe found that the number of apartments favorited by potential renters jumped 81% year-over-year, pushing the city up 10 spots in this ranking. RentCafe said that when such a higher number of renters are saving listings, it’s a strong sign they’re eyeing specific units rather than casually browsing.

Several other positive metrics pushed Cincinnati to the top of this list: Page views for Cincinnati apartment listings on RentCafe increased by 3% as of the end of 2025 while saved searches increased by 14%.

RentCafe found that the second most in-demand city on its list was Atlanta, which ranked second in the country for favorited apartments. Saved searches also inched up, especially from renters searching out of New York and nearby Georgia cities.

Minneapolis ranked third on RentCafe’s list. Here, favorited listings jumped 29% on a year-over-year basis. Minneapolis also ranks fifth for total saved searches on RentCafe and ninth for total page views.

Here, favorited listings jumped 29%, showing renters are switching from casually scrolling to selecting, even though traffic for Minneapolis apartments softened a bit.

Other Midwest cities performing well in RentCafe’s rankings include Cleveland, which ranked as the sixth most in-demand rental market in early 2026; Kansas City, Missouri, ninth; Grand Rapids, Michigan, 12th; St. Paul, Minnesota, 15th; Chicago, 16th; Overland Park, Kansas, 18th; Akron, Ohio, 22nd; Detroit, 24th; Knoxville, Tennessee, 29th; and St. Louis, 30th.
