Coldwell Banker Commercial study: Face-to-face business meetings, open office layouts not dead yet

It’s no secret that Millennials, Gen Xers and Boomers work in different ways. But some of the differences between these groups might surprise you.

And it might impact the way companies lease and buy office space.

Coldwell Banker Commercial recently released an office-space survey. The results show that these three generations have different views on the importance of meetings, the ideal office layout and the importance of being able to connect with the office and their work after hours.

You might think that Millennials would think of face-to-face business meetings as a waste of time. But while Millennials might embrace communicating through technology, they also understand that in-person meetings have value.

According to Coldwell Banker’s study, 77 percent of Millennials feel that face-to-face business meetings are important. Just 62 percent of Gen Xers and 69 percent of Boomers feel the same way.

But what about floor plans? Just 41 percent of Gen Xers cite the open floor plan as ideal for getting work done. Boomers are even more dismissive of this type of office layout, with just 37 percent of Boomers prefering open floor plans.

But Millennials? They like an open layout. The Coldwell Banker Commercial survey found thta 63 percent of Millennials prefer to work in an open office layout.

Millennials also consider staying connected to work even after hours as far more important than do their Boomer or Gen Xer peers. Coldwell Banker Commercial found that half of Millennials consider being connected to the workplace after hours as important. Only 40 percent of Gen Xers and 31 percent of Boomers feel the same way.
