Construction is officially underway at XS Tennis Village, a state-of-the-art athletic and academic facility in Chicago’s Washington Park neighborhood. Chicago general contractor Summit Design + Build, LLC started construction following a kick-off with Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Alderman Pat Dowell (3rd) in late August.
The new complex is being constructed on a 14-acre site at 5100 South State Street. Of the total 316,650 square feet, 110,000 will be indoor space featuring 12 full-size tennis courts, 4 mini “10 and under” tennis courts, locker rooms, offices, players’ lounge, and an 8,100 square foot fitness center with a basketball court and sprinting lane. The 206,650 square feet of outdoor space will feature 15 full-size tennis courts, four clay and 11 hard surface, and will include three stadium courts, two basketball courts, and a 150-meter running track.
XS Tennis Village will serve more than 5,000 youth and community members from Washington Park and other nearby neighborhoods including Woodlawn, Hyde Park, Bronzeville and Englewood. In addition to athletics, the new center will provide academic enrichment through programs like free tutoring, homework support, ACT and SAT prep, mentoring, and health and wellness education. Three classrooms, community activity rooms, a computer learning center, and library will be used for these services.
