As part of our series, CRE Future Leaders, we caught up with Jared Friedman, director of opportunities at Friedman Real Estate. Friedman not only oversees investment and acquisition opportunities, but adds value across the organization heading up new business, developing and maintaining institutional relationships, advising brokers and more.

Tell us about your background. Where did you grow up, where did you go to school?

I grew up in metro Detroit and went to Indiana University—Kelley School of Business.

When you were young, what did you aspire to be?

Fortunately or unfortunately I come from a real estate family. This led me to always have an interest in real estate. I spent most of my spare time growing up driving around looking at real estate with my dad.

How did you get your start in the industry?

My first real internship was with BMO Capital Markets. I thought I was going in there to work in the investment banking group but when they saw my background and real estate knowledge they immediately placed me in the real estate banking group.

Did you have a mentor who helped you get on your feet, or is there someone you turn to now for support?

Dave Welk was a huge mentor of mine. I worked for him in my second job out of school at Origin Investments. He was not only a great real estate mind but an easygoing guy who I got along very well with.

What does a day in the life of Jared Friedman look like?

Pure Craziness! Today, Friedman operates in 12 states with 550 people. I work with brokerage, property management, construction and acquisitions. We are constantly finding ways to add value to real estate and clients.

What do you like most about your job?

The different projects we work on. At Friedman we help take over everything from office buildings, to multifamily properties, retail centers and even build industrial buildings! Each day brings a new set of challenges.

Looking to the future, what do you hope to achieve/work on that you haven’t already?

Finding great long-term partners. Friedman has been in business for 30 years and has a great track record. The goal for the next 30 is to continue to work with great partners and develop more relationships.

How do you spend your time away from the office?

Sports and working out. I love to be active; hike, bike, play hockey. Anything I can do to keep my step count up.

What is your favorite place that you have traveled to? Where do you hope to go next?

My favorite place is Colorado. Because I am so active I love being outdoors in any temperature.

Who would you like to see answer these questions?

Sam Zell…living real estate legend.
