Transitioning from the restaurant industry to property management must have been quite a change. How did your previous experience shape the way you approach your role as a property manager today?
Joey Morisco: My transition from the restaurant industry to property management brought unexpected benefits. The customer service, multitasking and organizational skills from my restaurant experience have proven invaluable. The adaptability learned in the fast-paced restaurant environment has prepared me for the unpredictability of property management. Interpersonal skills acquired while dealing with diverse customers have facilitated positive tenant relationships. Overall, my restaurant background has enhanced my effectiveness as a property manager.
Managing a team of nine is no small feat. What leadership lessons have you learned in this role that you find particularly valuable?
Morisco: Managing a team of nine has taught me valuable leadership lessons. Clear communication, strategic delegation based on individual strengths and maintaining an open-door policy are crucial. Leading by example and adapting to evolving circumstances are also key. These lessons draw from my previous experience overseeing 50-plus staff members, where I honed these skills on a larger scale.
The transition from Millennium on LaSalle to Cobbler Square Lofts seems like a shift in both location and property scale. How do you approach the unique characteristics of each property when it comes to managing their distinct needs and resident expectations?
Morisco: Transitioning from Millennium on LaSalle to Cobbler Square Lofts has required adapting to different locations and property scales. Previously living at Cobbler Square Lofts has given me valuable insights into resident expectations. My approach involves tailoring management strategies to each property’s unique characteristics, focusing on community engagement in the urban setting of Millennium and preserving historical charm at Cobbler Square.
It’s fascinating that you have an interest in eventually owning your own property portfolio. What steps are you taking now to prepare yourself for that goal?
Morisco: I’m actively preparing to own my property portfolio by saving, investing and gaining practical insights through real estate opportunities. Networking, staying informed about market trends and developing my property management skills are integral parts of my strategy.
You’ve mentioned the challenges of unexpected issues arising in property management. Can you share more about this?
Morisco: Unexpected challenges in property management are part of the job. This can include sudden maintenance issues, tenant conflicts, regulatory changes, market fluctuations, natural disasters, technology integration and security concerns. A proactive approach, clear communication and staying informed are key to effectively addressing and mitigating these challenges.
Building a sense of community within the team seems integral to your experience. How do you foster such a strong sense of camaraderie among your colleagues?
Morisco: Communication is at the heart of fostering camaraderie within my team. Regular meetings, transparent communication and team-building activities contribute to a positive and collaborative atmosphere, strengthening our bond.
Time outside of work is important. How do you balance your busy career with personal interests?
Morisco: Balancing my busy career with personal interests, especially my two dogs, Bruno (Yorkie) and Bear (Golden Doodle), is a top priority. I allocate dedicated time each day for walks, play and quality moments with them. Additionally, spending weekends on outdoor activities with my dogs and family is a cherished part of my routine. It’s essential to create a work-life balance that allows me to recharge and enjoy the companionship of my pets and loved ones.
