To mark Women in Construction Week 2024 – which enters its final day today – Clayco, which has Midwest offices in Overland and Clayton, Missouri; Lenexa, Kansas; and Chicago, polled its female leaders about the many myths surrounding women in the construction industry and the actual truths that shatter those falsehoods.
Here is what these female leaders had to say.
Myth: Construction is only for men.
Reality: Construction is about more than just physical labor. It’s not just about strength – that’s what tools are for – it’s also about ability. A successful construction project requires strong organizational skills as there are countless tasks to juggle; attention to detail, especially when it comes to ever-changing deadlines and deliverables; problem-solving abilities; and effective communication. These are all qualities that many women possess in abundance. The inclusion of women in the construction industry brings a more diverse and dynamic workforce.
Myth: Women aren’t good leaders in construction.
Reality: The idea that leadership in construction can only be effective using an assertive style is outdated. Men AND women can be effective leaders in the construction industry. Women often bring a different perspective to leadership. Construction is a demanding field, and leaders come to the table to listen and show compassion and empathy.
Myth: It’s impossible for a woman to have a family and a successful career in construction.
Reality: It’s essential to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about women’s ability to balance family and career in traditionally male-dominated fields like construction. With the right support and opportunities, women can indeed have fulfilling careers in construction while also enjoying a fruitful personal life.
Myth: Construction isn’t a viable career option for women.
Reality: The construction industry can be very lucrative for women – both in the field and in the office. Women bring valuable skills and perspectives to the construction industry, including aptitude, communication and innovative, out-of-the box thinking. Promoting construction as a great career for women starts with education, encouraging young women to learn about all the benefits of working in construction.
Myth: Women can only succeed in construction in sales roles.
Reality: The idea that women can only succeed in sales in construction is long outdated. Women possess the skills and technical acumen to do the sales pitch AND build a building. Women can succeed in any role within the construction industry – whether that is in the field or working in the office – based on their skills, qualifications, and determination, rather than being limited to traditional gender roles or expectations.
