Jake Priester is project manager with Chicago-based construction, property management and leasing company Urban Innovations. And though his career in commercial real estate has been a relatively short one, he’s already made an impact in his field.

Here is a look at his career so far, and his goals moving forward.

Tell us about your background. Where did you grow up? Where did you go to school?

Jake Priester: I grew up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. After high school, I attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I earned a degree in Technical Systems Management with a minor in architectural studies.

How did you get your start in the industry?

Priester: During college, I discovered that I was more drawn to the technical aspects of architecture, while the conceptual and artistic side didn’t resonate as much with me. Although I valued the knowledge gained from those courses, I realized I needed to make a change for my future. While in school, I acquired an internship at a large general contractor company, where I quickly adapted to the fast-paced environment of Chicago’s commercial construction industry.

Did you have a mentor who helped you get on your feet, or is there someone you turn to now for support?

Priester: I’ve been fortunate to have many mentors throughout my career, each of whom took different paths but imparted valuable lessons along the way. In recent years, Derrick Wille has been an especially significant source of guidance. He’s helped me navigate uncertainties, provided a fresh perspective when I needed to sort through details and has always been there to listen as I work through challenges. I am deeply grateful for the support and mentorship he has offered throughout my career.

What does an average day at work look like?

Priester: An average day consists of a variety of tasks including preparing budgets and bids for potential clients, as well as visiting both active and upcoming jobsites to assess existing conditions, ensuring safety and developing cost-effective solutions. A typical day also includes regular communication with architects, owners and trade partners to assure all team members are aligned and working toward a common goal.

What do you like most about your job?

Priester: My favorite part of the job is addressing new and unique challenges. No two projects are alike, and each one provides an opportunity to learn something new. I take great satisfaction in seeing my clients happy with the transformation of a space, turning their vision into reality, all while gaining valuable experience along the way.

Looking to the future, what do you hope to work on/achieve that you haven’t already?

Priester: I aim to contribute to expanding Urban Innovations’ capabilities and expertise. As we take on more projects and continue to deliver excellent results for our clients, our reputation as a provider of quality construction will strengthen. In the near future, I hope Urban Innovations becomes a well-recognized name in the Chicagoland area, known for delivering high-quality construction services at an affordable price.

How do you spend your time away from the office?

Priester: I enjoy spending time with family and friends. Many of my friends have relocated across the country, and I make an effort to visit as many as I can each year. These trips allow me to catch up with loved ones while also exploring new cities and cultures.
