Hensel Phelps, an award-winning and expert development, construction and facility-services firm, is commemorating 50 years of business in Austin, Texas. In 1972, Hensel Phelps broke ground on its first project in Austin, constructing the Town Lake Bridge, commonly known today as the Mopac Bridge. Since then, Hensel Phelps has completed major projects in and around Austin, valued at nearly $5 billion.
Since Hensel Phelps’ humble beginnings in June of 1937, founded by Mr. Abel Hensel Phelps in Greeley, Colorado, Hensel Phelps has grown as a family of hard-working individuals into a world-class builder. Projects span aviation, higher education, government, hospitality, healthcare, and more.

Hensel Phelps is also committed to the development and utilization of Small, Minority and Diverse Businesses. This year, Hensel Phelps was awarded their fourth Small Business Administration’s Dwight D. Eisenhower Award, honoring large prime contractors that have excelled in their utilization of small businesses as suppliers and subcontractors. Additionally, Hensel Phelps was awarded the National AGC Diversity & Inclusion Excellence Award, and the ABC National Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Excellence Award in the General Contractor category. To date, no other contractor has received both the ABC and AGC national diversity awards in the same year.
Having deep roots in the Austin community, Hensel Phelps has enjoyed giving back over the years.
