Hines, in partnership with Simon Property Group, unveiled new renderings along with the name and brand of the firms’ recently launched residential building, part of the larger mixed-use development around the Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

In a subtle nod to the eighth President of the University of Michigan, Harlan Hatcher, the property will be dubbed The Harlan.

The Harlan represents the storied charm and depth of heritage that Ann Arbor embodies, pulling from its legacies in both academia and industry. Inspired by the core design principles of high-end hospitality spaces, The Harlan will appeal to a diverse array of renters, including graduate students, young professionals, University faculty and staff, and downsizing homeowners who are seeking convenience, refinement and community through thoughtfully curated energy and upscale maturity.

In keeping with Ann Arbor’s progressive movement towards a more sustainable and a low-carbon future, The Harlan is designed to be a fully electric building that will draw its power from 20,000 sq. ft. of solar panels on its rooftops. The property will use native plant species, eliminating the need for irrigation water. Low-impact infrastructure such as permeable pavement and parking to manage stormwater runoff will also be prioritized.

The Harlan will also incorporate inviting outdoor green spaces in lieu of hardscaping, creating an aesthetically pleasing resident and public amenity. 10% of the property’s parking spaces will feature EV charging, with the option to expand this capacity as demand grows. The Harlan will target LEED Certified or Silver accreditation – only two residential properties in Ann Arbor have achieved the esteemed LEED status.
