Leopardo Companies recently began work on the adult emergency department expansion and state-of-the-art build-out for the University of Chicago Medicine on its Hyde Park campus at Maryland Avenue and 57th Street.
The project is part of UChicago Medicine’s Get CARE plan, which aims to dramatically increase access to emergency, trauma and specialty care within Chicago’s South and Southwest Side neighborhoods.
The 30,000-square-foot build-out will convert a street-level portion of the existing parking garage at the medical center into the new adult emergency department. The completed space will feature 24 exam rooms, four trauma bays, rapid assessment areas, as well as CT and X-ray rooms.
The Get CARE plan was unanimously approved by the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board in May 2016. In addition to the new and larger emergency department, the plan includes a dedicated cancer hospital and 188 added inpatient beds to support the expansion.
Serving as construction manager at risk, Leopardo is working with architect Moody Nolan to complete the project. The adult emergency department is on track for an early 2018 completion.
