The luxury electric auto manufacturer Lucid Motors is taking steps to open a service center on Goose Island. According to job descriptions posted on the company’s website, Lucid is hiring both service technicians and a service manager to be based at a Goose Island location.
A Lucid Motors rep has confirmed to REjournals that the company will be opening a service center on North Cherry Avenue on Goose Island later this year, while its retail/sales location — or Lucid Studio — will open in the coming weeks at the Oakbrook Center shopping mall. The company is also currently hiring for its Oak Brook showroom.
The news may not come as a huge surprise to electric vehicle enthusiasts.
Last summer, Lucid announced that it would launch a major expansion by opening 20 sales and service centers around the country in 2021. Cities listed in the announcement include Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, and West Palm Beach.
A previous announcement from March 2020 did specifically mention Chicago as an expansion market for its studio showrooms and service centers.
Lucid’s growth spurt comes as competition in the electric vehicle space has reached new highs. Competing electric truck maker Rivian, which in 2017 purchased the former Mitsubishi Motor Corp. assembly plant in Normal, is opening a Chicago showroom in Fulton Market. Tesla has six dealerships in the greater metro area, with two being within Chicago city limits.
The company’s flagship Air model, which features 480 horsepower and a range of 406 miles, starts at $77,400, or just under $70,000 after federal tax credits.
Other auto-related businesses at or near Goose Island include the McGrath Acura and Lexus dealerships on Division Street and Fletcher Jones Audi, which has showrooms on North Avenue and a service center on Elston.
