MC Industrial, Inc. has been selected by NRG, a Fortune 250 utility company, to complete environmental upgrades at the Powerton Generating Station in Pekin, Ill., a 1536-MW plant with the capacity to power more than 1.2 million average homes.
The plant upgrades are a part of NRG’s investment to modernize its Illinois coal fleet and reduce emissions. These projects also assure compliance with the Combined Pollutant Standard rules developed by the Illinois EPA and approved by the Illinois Pollution Control Board.
Construction activities began for the first upgrade with MC Industrial self-performing an Air Quality Control System installation project. The scope of work includes installation of two new Trona Dry Sorbent Injection units, PDC building foundations and associated balance of plant equipment and structures.
The second upgrade involves an Ash Handling and Precipitator Installation project. With the goal of meeting an aggressive outage window, MC Industrial is performing a prefabricated modules ground strategy utilizing a 2,500-ton crane to support the installation. This approach allows the modules to be installed safer and faster, minimizing the overall project risk and achieving a shorter outage by two weeks of the original projected goal.
MC Industrial is leading the project site with local union trade and equipment manufacturers to complete the ACQS retrofit. These two projects add to MC Industrial’s established resume of environmental upgrade projects in the power market sector.
