Meridian Design Build recently completed construction on a 306,448-square-foot automated package sortation and distribution center in Niles, Illiniois, for developer Scannell Properties. The new build-to-suit facility is located on a 34-acre redevelopment site at the southeast corner of Howard Street and Lehigh Avenue.
The scope of the design-build project included the demolition of multiple parking lots and an existing 756,000-square-foot industrial building, which had been home to a Grainger distribution center for over 50 years. More than 50,000 tons of concrete were crushed onsite and incorporated in the new construction.
Significant infrastructure improvements were completed in conjunction with the work including the reconstruction of Menard Avenue and the installation of new traffic signals at the intersection of Menard Avenue and Howard Street.
The facility features 101 loading docks, 562 auto parking stalls, 236 interior van loading positions and 249 exterior trailer stalls. Additional construction included a freestanding 5,180 SF vehicle maintenance garage and 2,400 SF gateway security building. This project is registered with the USGBC and is awaiting LEED certification.
Architectural and Structural design services were provided by Precept Design, LLC and civil engineering work was completed by Spaceco, Inc.
