Mortenson Construction is expanding its full-service real estate solutions in Chicago by establishing a formal development office and appointing J. Randall Tieman as Chicago’s director of real estate development.
Working with Greg Werner, vice-president and head of Mortenson’s Chicago office, Tieman will lead development projects from project feasibility analysis, site selection and acquisition, planning and financing through completion.
“While most builders stick with construction, Mortenson is dedicated to offering our clients a complete range of top-quality real estate solutions. We’ve been providing development services for companies such as Allstate, JW Marriott and Hilton and have found that there are great synergies for our clients and for Mortenson by participating in the full cycle of development, construction and property management,” Werner said.
As in Chicago, Mortenson is focused on significantly growing its development business nationwide and is recruiting proven development executives including Tieman to build its operations.
“With more than 25 years in commercial real estate development in Chicago, Randy brings the leadership and experience necessary to establish and expand Mortenson Development in Chicago,” said Bob Solfelt, vice president and general manager of Mortenson Development. “We aim to establish Mortenson Development as a leader in the Chicago marketplace just as we have with Mortenson Construction.”
Before joining Mortenson, Tieman, 58, was a managing director of real estate for developer Janko Group. While there, he oversaw acquisitions, equity sourcing, portfolio management and leasing. Tieman previously was senior vice president of development at Opus North Corporation and vice president with then-Walsh, Higgins & Company. He has a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Illinois.
Tieman is active in a number of professional and charitable organizations. He is the former chairman of the steering committee for the Greater Chicago Food Depository. He also served as a board member, Chicago chapter president and member of the National Build-to-Suit Forum of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP.) He holds a real estate sales license in Illinois.
