Mortenson Construction will be serving as the builder for Mercyhealth‘s new $485 million healthcare project in Rockford, Illinois, which includes a new specialty women’s and children’s hospital and multi-specialty clinic building.
Construction on the project broke ground June 6, with both facilities scheduled for substantial completion in January, 2019.
With an impressive track record in healthcare work including building the new 296-bed Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Illinois and leading the JV partnership to build the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, Mortenson’s Chicago office will now be adding another major project to its portfolio by serving as the construction manager.
The firm will work closely with architect and engineer, AECOM, to build the 7-story, 451,000-square-foot hospital and 5-story, 81,500-square-foot clinic near the intersection of I-90 and East Riverside Boulevard.
It was the firm’s extensive experience that made Mortenson stand out as the best fit for the project, according to Mercyhealth Vice President of Facilities and Construction, Joanna Benning.
“Time and again, this team has delivered the highest quality, safely, on time and on budget,” she said.
The new hospital will focus on specialty women’s and children’s medical services, intensive care for all ages, cardiac center and the area’s only Level 1 Trauma Center. The multi-specialty clinic will house labs, physical therapy and other outpatient services as well as administrative offices.
The new medical campus is located about 9 miles east of Mercyhealth’s current Rockford hospital, which will continue to offer emergency care, surgical services, outpatient behavioral health services and cancer clinic.
