Plans for the Engis Technology Center

Elgin, Ill.-based MTI Construction Services recently began construction of a 54,000-square-foot addition to the Engis Corporate Headquarters facility in Wheeling, Ill. MTI had served as the design/build contract on Engis’ original headquarters building in 1989.

The multi-million dollar new addition will nearly double the size of the corporate headquarters facility, bringing the size of the building to 121,500 square feet. The expansion will allow the company to consolidate its engineering, process development, manufacturing, warehouse and administrative offices into one facility instead of leasing separate space for some company departments. Engis has been leasing space in another Wheeling facility.

Engis Corporation is a provider of complete superabrasive finishing solutions for lapping, honing, polishing and grinding operations. The company serves a variety of industries nationally and internationally, including oil and gas, electronics, semi-conductor, medical, aerospace and defense.

The new Engis Technology Center will include five laboratories: •The Process Development Lab (PDL), for general industrial lapping and polishing inquiries. •The Wafer Process Lab (WPL), to serve the advanced material and compound semiconductor markets. •The Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Lab, to focus on the needs of the data storage industry. •The Diamond Characterization Lab (DCL), which includes the Engis’ Metrology (measurement) Lab. •The Bore Finishing Lab (BFL), which works closely with customers on honing and bore finishing applications in the automotive, hydraulic, medical, advanced ceramic, compressor, aerospace and defense industries.

Construction on the project began this April, and is expected to finish by late fall of 2011.
