Need to store those records from the ’50s? Online marketplace SpareFoot can help

Do you have too much stuff? Is your basement overflowing with bicycles you never pedal or books you’ve never read? You’re not alone. Now a new online service is here to help if you happen to live or do business in Chicago.

Online self-storage finder SpareFoot in early May launched its service in the Chicago market. Now you can use it to help find a place in the city to stow that old couch from your college days or that fifth silverware set from your wedding.

SpareFoot, according to a company press release, ranks as the country’s largest online marketplace that allows consumers to find and reserve self-storage units.

The service, which is free for consumers to use, allows visitors to compare self-storage facilities in their neighborhoods. They can also use it to view photos of facilities and read customer reviews. And, perhaps most importantly, they can use it to reserve self-storage space for free.

Will this service take off in Chicago? SpareFoot officials have some compelling evidence that it will. As the company reports, Chicago has some of the highest monthly rents for self-storage facilities in the country, with the average 10-foot-by-10-foot unit costing more than $146 a month.

“With storage space at a premium in Chicago, SpareFoot knows that local residents will benefit from this free service to help find the solution to their self-storage needs,” said Chuck Gordon, co-founder and chief executive officer of SpareFoot, in a written statement. “Whether looking to store furniture and boxes, or cars and RVs, someone who uses SpareFoot can find the right facility at the right price in the right location.”
