Some surprising facts that might make you hate tax day a bit less

If tax returnyou’re like most people, you dread April 15. It’s tax day, after all.

But maybe you shouldn’t fear this day. The numbers actually point a pretty soothing picture of tax day.

Consider this: According to the numbers from the IRS, the vast majority of us get a tax refund each year. Yes, filling out your tax forms can be a hassle. But if there’s a refund on the other end of it? That work pays off, right?

According to the IRS, of the more than 149 million tax returns filed in 2014, more than 109 received a refund. Those tax returns earned an average refund of $2,918 last year.

Here’s another interesting fact: The IRS generally sends out its refunds quickly. The IRS reports that it sends out nine of 10 refunds in less than 21 days.

Worried about being audited? The odds are against this ever happening to you, too. According to the IRS, more than 99 percent of all income tax returns each year do not receive an audit.

So, are you still filing your income taxes at the last possible minute? You’re not alone. But maybe it’s time to follow the lead of those relative few who file their returns as early as possible. The number of consumers who do file early — very early — is on the rise. DealNews reported that the IRS received 14 million 2014 tax returns this year in January, as early as you can get.
