Sterling Bay Companies has announced the appointment of John Gavin as a principal with the firm. Gavin brings with him considerable relationships in the institutional investment community, which should allow Sterling Bay’s to generate increased opportunities for sourcing capital and developing co-investment opportunities.

Gavin joins Sterling Bay with more than 17 years of commercial real estate experience working with institutional investors in the acquisition and disposition of major commercial assets in Chicago and across the Midwest. Most recently Gavin was an executive vice president of Grubb & Ellis’ Institutional Capital Markets Group. John Gavin also served as a director in the Capital Markets Group of Cushman & Wakefield from 1995 to 2009.

In his roles at Grubb & Ellis and Cushman & Wakefield, Gavin advised institutional owners of major office assets, assisting them in asset valuation, investment analysis, and development of investment strategies. During his career he has participated on 100 major disposition and recapitalization assignments with an aggregate value of over $5.0 billion in value.

Since the middle part of the year, Gavin has been involved in five major assignments totaling more than 1.7 million square feet of space and valued at more than $200 million.

Gavin serves as an active member in Urban Land Institute, an active board member for Catholic Charities, a member of the Chicago Neighborhood Development Committee and a member of the Chicago Architecture Foundation.  Gavin graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science Degree.
