Chicago-based Tandem Construction has started work on the second stage of a $4.2 million renovation of the Union League Boys & Girls Club at 2157 W. 19th St. in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. This phase of the project entails a full remodel of the original 19th century “Club One” building, and follows Tandem’s completion in July of a four-story, 17,000-square-foot annex adjacent to the existing facility.

Dating back to the late 1880s, the four-story, 18,000-square-foot Club One building once housed a saloon and has been home to the Union League Boys & Girls Club since 1920. During the remodel, Tandem will renovate an existing gymnasium, build a state-of-the-art technology center and remove an unused swimming pool in the basement to create multi-purpose space.

Additionally, plumbing, HVAC and electrical systems will be connected to new systems already in place in the adjoining annex, and central air conditioning will be installed in the building. Tandem will also upgrade interior finishes throughout the building and resolve any abatement issues.

The completion of Phase Two is slated for end of 2012 and will mark the conclusion of the full Union League Boys & Girls Club renovation project.

Completed in July, the 17,000-square-foot Phase One annex addition to the Union League Boys & Girls Club more than doubled the club’s total activity space and made the entire facility accessible and ADA-compliant. The annex houses a new two-story gymnasium, science lab, two multi-purpose activity spaces, expanded kitchen facilities, and a modern infrastructure of HVAC, plumbing, electrical and state-of-the-art life safety systems and equipment.

Chicago-based Antunovich Associates served as architect for the project.
