Urban planner joins Stantec in Minneapolis

Thomas Leighton has joined design and engineering firm Stantec as a senior urban planner and economic development specialist in Minneapolis.

Leighton has been doing implementation-oriented planning and community development since the start of his career. For 15 years, he served as the City of Minneapolis’ lead for planning and community development in North Minneapolis. He was the project manager for a efforts that have led to changes along West Broadway, its main commercial corridor, and along the Mississippi riverfront.

In 2013, Leighton founded Tangible Consulting Services to work with communities on planning and development projects. Tangible provided services to clients in about 30 cities across Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin.

Leighton holds master’s degrees in Public Affairs and in Real Estate and the Built Environment from the University of Minnesota and Harvard University, respectively. He is certified in urban planning and economic development finance through the American Institute of Certified Planners and the National Development Council. He is a member of the American Planning Association.
