Vacant homes? Three Midwest cities have the highest percentage

The three U.S. cities cursed with the greatest number of vacant homes are each located in the Midwest, according to the latest research from ATTOM Data Solutions. And two of them are located in the same state, Michigan.

According to ATTOM, more than 1.3 million of the nearly 85 million U.S. homes were vacant in February of this year. That’s 1.6 percent of all U.S. homes. That number might seem high, but it’s actually down. ATTOM reported that the number of vacant homes across the United States was down 9 percent from September of 2015.

But there are still plenty of cities struggling with a high percentage of vacant homes. Flint, Michigan, leads the way, with 7.5 percent of the city’s housing stock vacant, according to ATTOM’s research. That comes out to 11,605 homes.

Detroit is second on the list, with 5.3 percent of its homes vacant. That comes out to 81,190 empty homes.

Youngstown, Ohio, is third on the list, with 4.4 percent of its homes vacant, or 6,979 empty residences.
