It’s a common threat during any presidential election: “If the other candidate wins, I’m moving to Canada.”
Turns out, though, Canada wasn’t the only foreign destination that U.S. residents considered — at least briefly — following Donald Trump’s election-day win.
According to research from the National Association of Realtors, online searches for international property surged by more than 500 percent immediately after Trump’s win.
According to Realtor.com’s international data, between 10 p.m. Eastern Time and 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Election Day, Nov. 8, page views at realtor.com/international jumped 948 percent compared to the same time period one week earlier. The surge continued Nov. 9, with traffic hitting a high at 1 p.m. Eastern Time, whenpage views rose 536 percent compared with the same time the week before.
The top five countries according to views? According to Realtor.com they were Mexico, Jamaica, Canada, Spain and France.
Now, how many people will actually move? That’s another story. And many of these international views were certainly unrelated to Trump’s presidential victory.
But for others? The allure of a new, international home was probably pretty strong Nov. 9.
