William McHale Executive vice president, retail development Ryan Companies US, Inc. Minneapolis
As the leader of the retail team at Minneapolis-based Ryan Companies US Inc. for the last 26 years, William McHale has helped lead the development and construction of more than 13.5 million square feet of shopping center space across the country.
That’s a significant impact. And the projects on which McHale has worked run the gamut, including everything from mixed-use projects to brownfield developments to community shopping centers.
The tenants with whom McHale has worked are a veritable who’s who of the nation’s top retailers. The list includes such retail giants as Target, Home Depot, Costco, Lowe’s, Kohl’s and dozens of others.
What is McHale’s secret? How has he managed to build such a successful career? He’s hard-working, smart and honest. He provides top service to his customers. And, as he’s quick to tell anyone who asks, he works for a top company. McHale always attributes his success to what he calls Ryan’s mission of building lasting relationships. McHale points to the long-lasting relationship that Ryan has with hometown retailer target as a prime example.
McHale, of course, is no newcomer to the commercial industry. He’s honed his skills during a career that’s lasted for more than 36 years. McHale first entered the business in 1976, when he joined Coldwell Banker as a salesperson. He first joined Ryan Companies in 1986 as vice president of retail development.
McHale is no stranger to industry awards. He’s a recipient of the Minnesota Shopping Center Association Award of Excellence for his work on the Rockford Road Plaza. He’s also won several STARR Awards, including a Real Estate Development award for his work on The Quarry and a Design & Aesthetics award for his efforts on behalf of Cedar Point Commons. He also earned a Redevelopment award for his work on Cedar Point Commons.
And McHale’s success extends far beyond the Twin Cities. Chicago Business Journal, for instance, once named McHale the top developer in the greater Chicago area.
