Wold Architects & Engineers celebrated the completion of a multiphase expansion and renovation project at WinnMed in Decorah, Iowa. The project includes a new 42,000-square-foot outpatient center, the final major phase of WinnMed’s Transforming Tomorrow project, a transformative effort to advance care across the campus.
The completion of the outpatient center is the latest milestone in Wold’s longstanding partnership with WinnMed, which began with the development of a comprehensive master facilities plan. As the organization adapted to evolving community needs and lessons learned following the COVID-19 pandemic, the master plan evolved alongside it, creating a roadmap for a more flexible and efficient campus that supports the future of healthcare delivery. With the previous expansion of the surgery center and renovation of the mother-baby unit, the three phases represent a comprehensive investment in the campus, all designed to improve patient access, streamline care delivery and support the health system’s long-term vision for serving the community.
The campus transformation was designed through a collaborative Lean 3P planning process. The expanded surgery center provides additional capacity and improved surgical environments to support WinnMed’s growing surgical services, while the reconfigured and renovated mother-baby unit creates an updated, comfortable environment that supports families and care teams throughout the childbirth experience. Building upon the success of earlier improvements, the new outpatient center reimagines the arrival and care experience with flexible clinical spaces, technology-driven registration and scheduling, sustainable building systems and materials and a patient-centered layout.
Completed in three phases to minimize disruptions to hospital operations, the renovated mother-baby unit opened in January, followed by the expanded surgery center in May and the completion of the new outpatient center. Together, the improvements create a more welcoming and efficient environment for patients, families and care teams while reinforcing WinnMed’s commitment to delivering exceptional care to the community for years to come.
