As we come to the end of Women in Construction Week, Illinois Real Estate Journal continues to highlight the careers of some of the many women who have built thriving careers in the Chicago-area commercial construction industry. Here is a look at the busy career of Amanda May, project manager with Chicago’s Urban Innovations.
What led you to pursue a career in construction?
Amanda May: I have always enjoyed designing and building things. My grandfather was a carpenter, and I spent a lot of time with him growing up. He took me to his projects, and I enjoyed seeing them come to life. A lot of hard work went into the completion of a project, and I have always appreciated that about construction.
What challenges have you faced in building a career in a male-dominated industry like construction?
May: Being the only female in the room can be intimidating at times, but it is also an opportunity to share a different perspective.
Have you noticed an increase in the number of women entering the construction industry? If so, why do you think that is?
May: Yes, I have noticed an increase in the number of women entering the industry over the past five years. I believe it is a combination of many factors such as employers integrating more diverse hiring practices, increased education in schools about opportunities in construction and an increase in internship and apprenticeship programs sponsored by schools and construction businesses.
What do you find most fulfilling about working in the construction industry?
May: Working with a diverse team of professionals with a common goal.
What advice do you have for other women interested in pursuing a career in construction?
May: Be confident and know that you have something to bring to the industry if it’s where you want to be.
