Principle Construction completed the renovation of the Heartland Animal Shelter in Wheeling, Illinois, which was damaged by a water main break in June 2024.

A grand reopening celebration was held on February 16, welcoming animals back to their newly renovated space.

The 8,205-square-foot facility at 586 Palwaukee Drive in Wheeling now provides a safe and comfortable temporary home for over 100 animals as they await adoption or fostering.  The renovation project, completed between November 2024 and early January 2025 includes a 601-square-foot staff office, an 850-square-foot surgery room, a 66-square-foot donation room and parking for 23 vehicles.

During the flood, the shelter’s animals were cared for in foster homes. With the renovation complete, many of these animals can now return to the shelter and be available for adoption. Heartland Animal Shelter is a no-kill shelter with an impressive 96% adoption rate.

The project team included Darrin Dehmlow (Project Manager, Principle Construction), Scott Nagel (Superintendent, Principle Construction), and Designhaus (Architect).
