McCarthy Building Companies Inc., in partnership with Lipps Construction Company of Mt. Vernon and Shores Builders of Centralia, has completed the new Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mount Vernon, Ill.  The 359,000-square-foot replacement hospital, co-sponsored by SSM Health Care of St. Louis and Felician Services of Chicago, nearly doubles the size of the current hospital.

The new Good Samaritan Regional Health Center, designed by BSA LifeStructures, consists of a garden level and five floors. The facility features 134 all-private rooms and a convenient layout for outpatient services and parking, as well as many innovative design features.

A new 141,000-square-foot medical office building, which includes a surgery center and numerous outpatient diagnostic services, is connected to the hospital. Total construction costs for the hospital, the medical office building and the surgery center is approximately $237 million.

At its peak, the construction of Good Samaritan Regional Health Center created more than 350 construction jobs and infused the local economy with significant participation opportunities.

“It is impressive to see how the Mt. Vernon economy was stimulated by the Good Samaritan project, and McCarthy was very proactive in community engagement,” said Mike Armstrong, director of plant facilities for St. Mary’s Good Samaritan.

“From the project’s inception, utilizing local firms was a key focus for the team,” said McCarthy Project Director Jeff Boyer. “Several strategies, such as teaming smaller local subcontractors with national firms, enabled an overwhelming amount of local contractors to be involved in this project. In fact, 85 percent of the subcontracted work utilized subcontractors and vendors located within 90 miles of the jobsite.”
