Macy’s to close another Midwest store, this time in St. Louis

Macy’s late last year closed its store in downtown St. Paul, Minn. Now the retailer, citing sluggish sales, is closing another Midwest location, this time its St. Louis store, also in that city’s downtown.

In a written statement, Peter Sachse, Macy’s chief stores officer, said, “The level of customer activity we see no longer justifies keeping the store open.”

The Macy’s in downtown St. Louis first opened its doors in 1924. The retailer fills 189,000 square feet in the city’s Railway Exchange Building.

This isn’t the first time that Macy’s has brought bad news to St. Louis. In 2011, the retailer downsized its St. Louis location. Officials said they made this move to keep the St. Louis store open.

Sales, though, were too slow to convince Macy’s officials to keep even the scaled-down store open.

The Macy’s in downtown should close by the middle of June. A total of 94 associates work at the store, while 100 corporate employees work at the location. Company officials said the corporate employees will be relocated to Macy’s offices in Earth City, Mo. Some associates might be offered positions at other Macy’s locations.
