Construction commenced last month on 16 two- and three-flat buildings in a section of Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood. The affordable housing units are the next step in the nonprofit Volunteers of America Illinois’ plan to rebuild the neighborhood near Hope Manor ll, an affordable living development the group finished in 2014.
The $14.9-million project, known as Hope Manor Village, is being built on scattered sites on the 5900 and 6100 blocks of South Peoria Street, the 5900 and 6000 blocks of South Green Street and the 6100 block of South Sangamon Street. Joseph J. Duffy Co. provided pre-construction services with a lump sum contract. Worn Jerabek Wiltse Architects, P.C., are the project’s architectural firm.
The Safeway-JJ Duffy joint venture project is made up of 28 two-bedroom and 10 three-bedroom apartments. When completed, the two-bedroom units will have one bathroom and a complete kitchen, and the three-bedroom units include two bathrooms along with the full kitchen. The wood frame residences feature fiber cement horizontal lap siding and panels. Site work for each of the buildings includes landscaping and fencing.
This is the fourth Hope Manor project that the Joseph J. Duffy Company built for Volunteers of America, Illinois. Two were built in Chicago, while Hope Manor lll was built in Joliet. Multiple accolades were presented to the previous Hope Manors, including Best Urban Project, Affordable Housing Finance Reader’s Choice Award, and Best Large Property of the Year by VOA National (Hope Manor ll). The previous Hope Manor projects are for veterans and their families. The apartments in Hope Manor Village will not be exclusively for veterans but are open to all renters who meet the city’s income standards for affordable housing.
