Work is set to begin to turn the former James C. Bush Elementary School, 2117 W. Church Street in Johnsburg, Illinois into affordable senior living housing. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a formal groundbreaking will not be scheduled.
Joseph J. Duffy Co. is the general contractor for General Capital Group’s new, 68-unit development, which will be managed by Oakbrook Corporation. The Duffy company provided pre-construction services, concluding in a lump sum contract to build the project, working with Hooker DeJong Architects, Inc.
The administration and gym areas of the existing one-story school will be renovated into 14 apartments, resident support facilities and office space. A three-story wing housing 54 one- and two-bedroom units will be added. Each apartment will include a full bath and kitchen.
An exterior of brick and fiber cement siding will cover the wood-frame structure. The fully sprinkled building will have two individual elevators and energy efficient windows. The mechanical, electrical and plumbing includes a split system with packaged HVAC units.
Residents can enjoy walking paths through a fully landscaped and irrigated site, along with a patio area. A paved parking lot, off-site infrastructure improvements and a playground area are included in the development.
