Krusinski Construction Company has completed a dynamic, multi-faceted research, development and innovation center for Flavorchem, transforming a pre-existing 25,390-square-foot building previously used for storage. Flavorchem is now fully operational in the building located at 1429 Centre Circle in Downers Grove, Illinois.

Flavorchem specializes in the creation and manufacturing of flavor and color solutions for the food, beverage and nutraceutical industries. Customers of the privately held business, headquartered in Downers Grove, include first class brands well recognized around the world.

Key, central elements of the research, development and innovation center include four application centers, essentially serving as test kitchens, built around a showroom kitchen. The application centers are specific to key business segments for Flavorchem: bakery, confection, beverage and a miscellaneous or multi-purpose area. It is in the application areas where Flavorchem hosts client development meetings creating and testing flavors for its various product lines. Each application center is outfitted with appliances and equipment that is appropriate for the specific sector.

“This has been a truly transformative project, converting what primarily had been a storage facility into a modern and highly stylized research, development, marketing and sales center,” said Tim O’Driscoll, senior project manager, Krusinski Construction Company. “The space is cohesive, flows very well together and allows Flavorchem to make a great impression with clients and prospects.”

The application centers are built around a fully equipped showroom kitchen. In addition to the product development spaces, which are the core of the building, the new space also includes three premium guest suites, a marketing center—with offices, workstations and a huddle room—along with a research and development lab. The overall outcome is a colorful, well-branded and functional building for Flavorchem.

The Krusinski Construction team included Tim O’Driscoll, Senior Project Manager; Nate Tenpas, project engineer; Erin Anderson, project coordinator and Rick Drews, general superintendent. Flavorchem project team partners included architect, GMA Architects, and civil engineer, CM Lavoie & Associates.

This research, development and innovation center marks the second facility Krusinski Construction has completed for Flavorchem. The first project completed in 2011 which achieved LEED-Silver Certification, included the interior and exterior renovation and building addition for lab, manufacturing and office space to its U.S. corporate headquarters in Downers Grove,

“It’s a rewarding feeling when you see the final product come to life,” said Joe Krusinski III, senior project manager, Krusinski Construction Company. “Especially for a valued, repeat client like Flavorchem, who trusted us with their vision of their future space. We are grateful for their partnership and look forward to supporting Flavorchem on future projects.”
