Saturday, February 28th in Hoffman Lanes, the District 54 Special Olympics held a fundraiser to support and fund their programs led by David Luzwick, Coordinator, School District 54 Special Olympics and Lisa Liesz, assistant coordinator. The event consisted of silent auctions, raffles, and a team bowling event.
Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities by giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. All of their events are organized, so students of similar abilities are competing against one another. The District 54 program is in conjunction with Special Olympics Illinois Area 18. They currently have 140 active athletes and offer 14 different activities that the athletes can participate.
Lee & Associates of Illinois volunteered their time, efforts and attended the event. “The District 54 Special Olympics team is the best of the best. They offer kids, regardless of abilities, the opportunity to enjoy being a part of a sport, social club, and travel outings. The fundraiser helps to subsidize their program and for us it is all about the kids! Giving back to our community is priceless and watching these kids become a part of it, is just the icing on the cake!” said Melissa Powell, vice president of Lee’s Asset Management Group. “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” — Special Olympics Motto
