Each year, Midwest Real Estate News runs its Commercial Real Estate Hall of Fame issue. This year, we are also running the profiles of this year’s CRE Hall of Fame class online. Today, we look at the busy career of Daniel Dunsmoor, brokerage executive vice president and principal with Colliers International in Columbus, Ohio.
Years in the business: More than 10
A market leader: Dan Dunsmoor with Colliers International is a commercial real estate leader in the Columbus market. Specializing in the lease and sale of Class-A and -B office buildings, Dunsmoor has been involved with more than 675 commercial real estate transactions during his still young career.
And this activity has generated plenty of volume. Dunsmoor’s transactions are valued at more than $700 million.
The people matter: Dunsmoor points to his peers as one of the main benefits of working in commercial real estate.
“I’m blessed to have the opportunity to work very closely with so many incredible people,” he said. “My clients are leaders of various companies, private equity funds and investment funds, and the nature of what I do requires that I collaborate very closely with some of the top service providers in Columbus. Furthermore, I’m surrounded by wonderful people at my firm. I constantly have the opportunity to learn something every day from people who are very successful.”
Plenty of awards: Dunsmoor has only been selling commercial real estate for a little more than a decade. That hasn’t stopped him, though, for notching some of the CRE industry’s most prestigious awards.
In 2016, the Columbus Board of Realtors honored Dunsmoor with the Largest Office Sale Transaction award. He was also named one of the market’s top 10 producers in both 2016 and 2017 by the board and was named to the board of Realtors’ 10 Under 40 Award list in 2016.
Dunsmoor has earned honors from Colliers International, too. Has has been named a member of Colliers’ Everest Club, which recognizes brokers who rank in the company’s top 10 percent in production nationally. He was also named brokerage assistant of the year by Colliers’ Columbus region in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
Finally, Dunsmoor made Columbus Business First’s list of 20 People to Know in Commercial Real Estate.
Meeting the challenges: Dunsmoor has already made an impact in the CRE industry. That doesn’t mean that he hasn’t faced challenges. Dunsmoor says that selling an office building is no easy task.
“You have to understand all aspects of the situation,” he said.
This includes the building owner’s goals and expectations, the active pool of buyers, market conditions, financing parameters and property specifics.
“In general, it is a very long and slow sales cycle, and there are many variables that make the process complex,” Dunsmoor said.
Out-of-office hours: Dunsmoor has two children, both girls, who are under 2 years old. The pair keep Dunsmoor and his wife, Jess, quite busy.
“Jess and I are having a blast watching them grow,” Dunsmoor said.
