Urban Innovations, Ltd. announced that HUB640, a historic property in Milwaukee’s Westown neighborhood, earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR® certification for exceptional energy performance.

This achievement distinguishes HUB640 as a leader among commercial properties nationwide. Pursuing and securing this certification for the first time reinforces the building’s commitment to long-term energy efficiency and sustainability.

HUB640 received an ENERGY STAR Rating of 77, making it more efficient than 77 percent of similar buildings nationwide. The 295,000-square-foot historic concrete loft building at 640 N Vel R Phillips is located in the heart of Westown, surrounded by a mix of retail and office buildings and just steps away from the city’s bustling weekly farmer’s market, weaving century-old architectural character with modern urban energy. It is home to office, retail, and apartment users.

The 130-year-old building required many updates to bring it up to this high level of efficiency including upgrading to LED lighting throughout the building, installing occupancy sensors to reduce unnecessary energy use, enhancing HVAC and elevator efficiency with modernized equipment and proactively identifying and addressing energy waste issues. The new ENERGY STAR rating means the building uses 35% less energy and emits 35% less greenhouse gases without sacrificing comfort or performance.
