Amazon continues to make an impact in the Kansas City commercial market, announcing plans to open an 855,000-square-foot fulfillment center in Kansas City, Kansas.
The center will be the online retailer’s third in the Kansas City region. Amazon already operates a 267,000-square-foot fulfillment center at the Lenexa Logistics Center. Construction is also underway on an 822,00-square-foot fulfillment center in Edgerton, Kansas, in the Logistics Park Kansas City.
The new fulfillment center will provide jobs for more than 1,000 workers.
Tim Cowden, president and chief operating officer of the Kansas City Area Development Council, said that the Kansas City region is an ideal fit for Amazon. The retailer can reach 85 percent of the U.S. population within two days from Kansas City.
“There is a very strong case for location in our region,” Cowden said in a statement.
The news from Amazon is just the latest ecommerce success story for the Kansas City area. The region has attracted such companies as S&S Active Wear, FoodServiceWarehouse.com, ReallyGoodStuff.com and Jet.com during the last three years. The Kansas City Area Development Council says that these ecommerce firms are investing $150 million in the region and will occupy more than 4 million square feet.
The new Amazon facility will be built on land formerly owned by NorthPoint Development near the southwest side of Interstate-70 and the Turner Diagonal freeway. The developers of the project include Cushman & Wakefield, Seefried Industrial Properties and USAA.
