Canopy / Architecture + Design has announced that they will move to new offices in Chicago’s Loop later this fall. The firm has occupied space near Milwaukee and Diversey Avenues for the past five years. The new studio will be located on the second floor of 180 W. Washington, in a 1920s Art Deco building designed by Hyland and Corse.
“Standing behind our collective practice model, we have built an initiative to have all our staff involved with design decisions as we shape the new space,” Jaime Torres Carmona, AIA, LEED AP, Canopy’s principal and founder, said in a statement. “As we continue uncovering layers of original details and ornament, we are focused on balancing the original with the new, in an effort to celebrate both history and modernity as an expression of our sensibilities as socially- and environmentally-driven architects. We see design in existing buildings as a key vehicle in addressing climate change, this space will serve as a symbol of our promise to the past as well as our embrace of the present and future in our work.”
Founded in 2009, Canopy’s projects range from residential to commercial to planning and urban design. They recently designed Oso Apartments, a 48-unit affordable rental community in Albany Park for Evergreen Real Estate Group and the Chicago Housing Authority.
