As an architectural designer at Baker Barrios Architects, Eliza Schmitt collaborates closely with a team to navigate both design and technical processes. In this feature, she offers a glimpse into the path that led her to Baker Barrios Architects and shares her aspirations for the future.

Tell us about your background. Where did you grow up? Where did you go to school?

I grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and attended the University of Minnesota’s Design School. During my time there, I developed a passion for sustainability, particularly in the built world. I knew early on that I wanted to incorporate sustainability into my career and personal life. After graduating, I decided to move to Chicago and have completely fallen in love with the city.

How did you get your start in the industry?

My dad is an architect, so I was immersed in the industry from a young age. I have so many memories of sitting in the car as he pointed out buildings he loved (and critiqued the ones he didn’t) or tagging along to job sites. Seeing architecture through his eyes trained me to notice details I might have otherwise overlooked.

Later, in high school, I took a class trip to Rome and Athens, and I was in complete awe of the sheer architectural scale and craftsmanship. Architecture had always been part of my world, but being up close to famous landmarks, like St. Peter’s Basilica and the Parthenon, was a turning point. This sparked a deeper curiosity and made me realize it was something I wanted to pursue further.

Did you have a mentor who helped you get on your feet, or is there someone you turn to now for support?

I’ve been lucky to have incredible mentors throughout my career. Many of my colleagues at Baker Barrios have been generous with their time and expertise. Truly every member of the Chicago office has acted as a mentor for me – there are so many deeply knowledgeable architects here who are always eager to share what they know, and the firm has a great culture of learning and growth.

Of course, my dad has also been a built-in mentor. His advice has been invaluable as I navigate the early years of my career, and I often turn to him for guidance. Seeing how he approaches design, problem-solving and leadership has had a big influence on me.

What does an average day at work look like?

I am a full-time Revit-clicker! Most of my day is spent drafting drawing sets or 3D modelling. While I work, I try to listen to one or two new albums every day.

Right now, I’m deep into a large six-building, multi-family residential project. We work closely as a team to tackle design challenges as they come up, which has given me exposure to a huge range of elements within the design process. This project has been a great opportunity to sharpen my technical knowledge and get a firsthand look at the complexities of managing something at this scale.

What do you like most about your job?

While architecture can be stressful, I love the problem-solving aspect. I enjoy flexing my design muscles, working through constraints and landing on a thoughtful, well-executed solution. Any design opportunity, big or small, gets me motivated.

I also really enjoy sitting in on meetings and soaking up knowledge from more experienced colleagues. There’s always something new to learn, whether it’s about project proposals, budgets or the little details that make a design work. Getting to see different sides of the profession keeps things exciting.

Looking to the future, what do you hope to achieve or work on that you haven’t already?

I’m looking forward to the future of sustainability in design. There are so many emerging technologies and opportunities in this space, and I’d love to be involved in innovative projects that push the industry forward. I earned my LEED Green Associate certification last year, and I’m looking forward to working on a LEED-certified project at some point. I also want to continue expanding my knowledge by pursuing credentials like WELL and LEED BD+C to stay at the forefront of sustainable design and ensure my work is both thoughtful and informed.

I’m also interested in exploring new areas like healthcare and hospitality. Each sector has its own challenges, and I’m eager to learn more about how thoughtful design can improve both functionality and user experience in these spaces.

How do you spend your time away from the office?

Outside of architecture, I love to work on creative pursuits—ceramics, knitting, painting, anything tactile. Woodworking or metalsmithing are high on my list of next targets!

I try my best to stay engaged in my community through volunteering at the Anti-Cruelty Society as well as serving on the Young Professionals Board for the Illinois Environmental Council. I’m also training for my second triathlon in August, which has been a great way to stay active and push myself. I can’t wait for long bike rides along the lake and finally diving into Lake Michigan once it warms up!
