Duluth International Airport’s New Passenger Terminal has been named one of the Midwest’s best projects by Engineering News Record. Built by Kraus-Anderson and designed by Reynolds, Smith and Hill, Inc., the $77.5 million terminal opened in January of 2013.
The project replaces an outdated facility that was built in 1973. The new terminal meets Federal Aviation Administration compliance requirements, Department of Homeland Security post-9/11 requirements and Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility guidelines. It also has new accommodations for processing international flights by Customs and Border Protection.
The 110,000-square-foot airline passenger terminal is LEED Silver-certified with sustainable green energy features such as a geothermal heating system and numerous windows for natural lighting.
Two main levels are connected by escalators, stairs and elevators. The terminal includes a new restaurant, lounge, gift shop, two baggage-claim carousels, vending and restrooms. A comfortable 400-seat passenger seating area is complete with Wi-Fi, TVs and in-floor outlets for electronics.
In addition, the project includes new long- and short-term parking lots, multiple pick-up and drop-off vehicle traffic lanes and a separate commercial-vehicle lane.
